NTN (hereinafter referred to as NTN) has developed a [hydrogen embrittlement resistant bearing] that has a life span of more than three times longer than that of NTN standard bearings by combining new steel materials with special heat treatment technology to prevent early bearing damage caused by hydrogen.
In the face of a major change in the automotive field, with the development of electric vehicles in full swing, the market's demand for more efficient power transmission devices is increasing, such as reducing the amount of lubricating oil in the device and reducing oil viscosity. Measures put the bearing under more severe lubrication conditions. Bearings run under severe conditions that have never been experienced so far, and there are early damages. The reason is the hydrogen embrittlement phenomenon caused by the penetration of hydrogen atoms into the steel material, which causes the strength of the steel material to decrease. In response to this phenomenon, we must seek a solution.
NTN's recently developed [Hydrogen Embrittlement Resistance Bearing] uses new steel materials and newly developed special heat treatment technology to suppress early damage caused by hydrogen embrittlement, and is a product that has achieved a longer life. There are many hard and fine metal compounds scattered on the surface layer of the bearing raceway surface using the new steel. Under thin lubrication conditions, it is not easy to wear even if the metal contacts, and the exposure of the new metal surface*1 that generates hydrogen atoms is suppressed. In addition, even if hydrogen atoms are generated, these fine metal compounds can suppress the penetration rate (diffusion) of hydrogen atoms inside the bearing. As a result, the life of the developed product has been increased by more than 3 times*2 compared to NTN standard bearings. In addition, the quenching in the special heat treatment process adopts nitriding treatment to increase the nitrogen concentration of the bearing raceway surface, which suppresses the development of bearing fatigue, improves the resistance to foreign matter, and realizes the long life under the condition of foreign matter mixed in and lubricated.
In addition, the new steel uses ingredients that reduce CO2 emissions during the heat treatment process, reducing the burden on the environment.
